Vital Signs podcast is a great tool for outdoor instructors
Yesterday, I had a great refresher on soft tissue injuries thanks to Vital Signs podcast. Vital Signs “is a series of online courses designed to satisfy continuing education hours for EMS providers through high quality distance-based training”. I highly recommend this podcast to any outdoor instructor looking for a refresher in the emergency medical field prior to teaching an expedition course, especially if you took your WFR a while back. Enjoy! http://www.jblearning.com/vitalSignsPodcast.cfm
New Wilderness First Aid course – American Red Cross
Outdoor instructor now have one more option for the medical training they received. The American Red Cross has announced the new revised Wilderness First Aid course. This course has been alingned with the Boy Scouts of America first aid guidelines and it hopes to serve not only the Boy Scouts but also that growing need of medical training for outdoor leaders. Release date – late February 2010!
Wilderness lifeguard training
How many of you go for a dip in a beautiful waterfall after a long day of hiking? Or, jump in the water after a day of paddling? Are you trained as a wilderness lifeguard? Is someone in your group trained? AEE, ACA and WEA all have standards for waterfront safety and swimming activities in the backcountry. However, the industry does not have a common agreement on a certification program for a “wilderness lifeguard”. What do you think? Do we need one? Would this be the next WFR? I really like the program that Landmark has in place.
Dr. Leo McAvoy keynote at AORE 2009
Dr. McAvoy spoke about three trends in the field of outdoor education. These trends are:
- The populations that we are receiving (in our programs) suffer from Nature Deficit Disorder.
- There is a professionalization of the outdoor leader (Academic degrees, certifications…).
- There is an increase of pressure on leaders to protect participants from all harm, leading to a water-down adventure experience.
What do you think about these trends?

Using Twitter at the AEE and AORE conference…
Professor Weisgerber from St. Edward’s University presents a clear message about claiming a space in Twitter and using it to connect and to engage with your community. I think about the AEE conference and the AORE conference ahead of us. How great will it be to have many outdoor professionals connected via Twitter collaborating during and after these conferences. What do you think?
